Former L.A. city councilman Richard Molony (1839-1938) named this street in 1910 on a tract he owned. The honoree: his eldest son Mark (1873-1920). (Nearby Clement Street is for another Molony boy.) Mark Molony was born in California, spent the 1890s as a sergeant in the SoCal National Guard and as a manager of an amateur baseball team, then became a blacksmith. His vocation took him first to an oil company in Fresno County and then to the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad in Las Vegas. He never married and his fate was a gruesome one – if you’re the squeamish sort, I advise you to stop reading now – he died from sepsis after getting gangrene on his penis and scrotum. I have no idea how this came to pass.
