Named by landowners Barton (1858-1948) and Lela (1875-1966) Darlington. Barton Darlington was born in Wisconsin but spent his formative years in the Philadelphia exurbs. He studied law privately and passed the Pennsylvania bar in 1885. After a few months practicing in Cheyenne, WY, Darlington yearned for California’s warmer climes and came to Los Angeles in 1887. His little brother Newell, a civil engineer, joined him a few years later and went on to some prominence: see Brentwood’s Darlington Avenue for more on him. Barton Darlington enjoyed no great renown as an attorney but did well enough. He married Lela Alice Monroe in 1910; her older sister Clara had actually married Newell the year before. All four Darlingtons – who had no children between them – wound up living on this very cul-de-sac, laid out in 1923. It appears Barton chose this area because he wanted to grow fruit.
