Named in 1941 for Doris Olwin Dickey (1916-2010) by her parents Ray and Edna Olwin. (See Ruthlee Avenue, which honors Doris’s sister, for more about the family.) Doris Newcomer Olwin – “Newcomer” was her mother’s maiden name – was born in Pasadena and raised in San Gabriel. She attended La Verne College (now the University of La Verne) before marrying John Samuel Dickey (1913-1996), a schoolteacher and former La Verne classmate, in 1938. After John’s Naval service during WWII, the couple settled in the North Tustin/Santa Ana area. There Doris raised their two children while John became a junior high principal. Doris Dickey was by all accounts a pillar of her community, as a Sunday school teacher, PTA member, avid golfer, and more.
