This private cul-de-sac was laid out in 1994 by developer Robert W. Chu on his Monterey Views tract, although its name may not be official: the street sign reads Holladay Way, as do some records. But if you’re curious, mei kwock – an older Western spelling of the original Chinese characters – is the Cantonese pronunciation of “America”. (Say it out loud and you can kind of hear it.) The characters are literally translated as “beautiful country”. Nowadays, most people write it meiguo in Roman letters to reflect the Mandarin pronunciation.
