For nearly sixty years, this street was officially just Maywood Avenue. The “North” was added by city ordinance in 1980; there is no “South” Maywood Ave. A tweak like this is typically designed to prevent conflicts with a similar-sounding roadway elsewhere in the city… but L.A. didn’t have another street called Maywood. Is it possible that someone wanted to disassociate Maywood Avenue from the city of Maywood, ten miles south? Your guess is as good as mine. The irony is that Maywood Ave. didn’t even start off with that name: in the early 1900s, it was known as Fairmont Ave. north of Colorado and Linden Ave. south of same. After the 1923 Los Angeles/Eagle Rock consolidation, City Council rechristened it Maywood Ave.
