Pilgrim Way

It’s no coincidence that Whittier’s Plymouth Congregational Church, although addressed on Beverly Boulevard, faces Pilgrim Way. (Surely you get the connection: Pilgrims, the Mayflower, Plymouth Rock, 1620, etc.) In fact the church’s members had requested the street name. It was formerly called Turnbull Drive, after nearby Turnbull Canyon. The bulk of Turnbull Drive had been renamed Beverly Blvd. in the late 1920s and the church figured that Whittierites wouldn’t miss this last remaining bit. The year was 1952 and the Plymouth congregants, whose church was then situated on the corner of College Street (now Wardman) and Bright Avenue, had recently purchased a plot of land at Beverly and Turnbull for their new digs. Paying to develop the road along with their new house of worship, they felt they had a right to call it what they wanted.
