It has nothing to do with any Honduran enclave that might have resided here. In fact Honduras Street was named by a committee of white American men. It was originally called 3rd Street in 1887, in the short-lived town of Vernondale. Ten years later, after the City of Los Angeles had annexed Vernondale and other communities, a group was formed to clean up all the duplicate street names caused by these annexations. To wit: Los Angeles already had a 3rd Street, so this one was put on the chopping block. The aforementioned group explicitly wanted to add more Spanish street names to the city (see Estrada Street for some examples) and Honduras certainly qualified. The word means “depths” in Spanish and the nation of Honduras allegedly owes its own name to its deep coastal waters.
