Ellenbogen Street

Named in 1954 after the late Louis Ellenbogen (1892-1952), who had lived on nearby Woodward Avenue. Ellenbogen was a Hungarian Jew who immigrated to the U.S. in 1906 and came to Los Angeles in 1912. Two years later, he married the New York-born Julia Margaretten (1894-1970). They and their three children settled in rural Sunland-Tujunga by 1929. Louis Ellenbogen manufactured women’s clothing but was listed as a “rancher” in the 1949 Sunland-Tujunga City Directory, so he presumably owned the acreage where Ellenbogen Street now lies.
