In the grand tradition – no pun intended – Pomona‘s founding fathers ensured that their new town (born 1875) would not have an unlucky 13th Street. However, Grand Avenue was originally called Crow Avenue, in honor of Pomona investor Harry Jeffrey “H.J.” Crow (c. 1831-1899), who was also instrumental in developing Glendale. “Crow” wasn’t exactly the swankiest street name, so some Pomonans tried to class it up by spelling it “Crowe”. It was officially renamed Grand in March 1907.
