Charles Klingerman (1843-1931) brought his family to El Monte in the spring of 1910, months after purchasing three lots from the late Lucky Baldwin‘s estate. Although he discreetly identified himself as a farmer and/or contractor on censuses, Klingerman was evidently quite wealthy: born in Pennsylvania and based for many years in Nebraska, he had mining interests in Wyoming and timberland and citrus groves in Florida, where he wintered before coming to California. (He eventually referred to his vocation as “banker”.) Klingerman married Ella Jameson (1851-1929) in Iowa in 1870. They had five sons and a daughter, all of whom would reside in El Monte. Paul Lester Klingerman (1888-1936), a drama teacher and monologist, was perhaps the most prominent of these kids. He and his wife Ethel had three sons of their own. Klingerman Street was most likely named (at Tyler Avenue) in 1932.
