Not sure why developer Lloyd S. Whaley added a space between “La” and “Vere”, since this 1941 street honors his then-wife LaVere (1908-1999). Born and raised in Lexington, NE, LaVere Harris married Whaley in 1927 and soon bore him two sons, Lloyd Dale and Rodney Dean. (Nearby Rodloy Avenue honors them both.) The family relocated to Long Beach in 1935 and added one more to the brood: Susan Jane (1939-2012). Although the local press painted a rosy enough picture of the Whaleys up through 1957, a contentious divorce made the news in 1960, with LaVere ultimately being awarded a third of Lloyd’s reported $3 million net worth. She spent the rest of her long life shuttling between homes in Palm Springs and Corona Del Mar.
