It’s basically an alley, but William F. “Bill” Czuleger (1909-1997), while he was a Redondo Beach councilman, wanted it named for his daughter Mary Ann (born 1945). Mayor Charles Wortham kept vetoing Czuleger’s request, so Czuleger waited for Wortham to go on vacation and had it quietly approved by City Council. (The street was named by 1960.) “He stayed away too long and it became law,” said Czuleger, who would take a turn as Redondo’s mayor himself from 1961 until 1977.
