New Avenue

New Avenue is not new. In fact it was named in May 1892 on a thousand acre ranch tract owned by Richard Garvey. It originated at its intersection with Garvey Avenue. The tract’s other north-south avenues were predictably citrus-themed: Lemon, Lime, and Orange. (Orange Avenue alone has kept its name.) Why did Garvey and/or his surveyor John E. Jackson choose “New” for this one? Unless it was a reference to Harris Newmark, who owned land due west of Garvey’s ranch, I have no idea, other than it was a “new” street that promised “new” beginnings and “new” revenue for whoever bought a lot or two upon it. Those original lots were huge, by the way – around 10 acres each.
