The Nithsdale name comes from Dumfriesshire, Scotland and refers to the dale (a.k.a. valley) around the River Nith. Said dale is only fourteen miles from Annandale, the dale around the River Annan. No surprise then that Pasadena’s Nithsdale tract, laid out in 1904, was designed as a companion to the nearby Annandale tract, established eighteen years earlier. Alexander Robert Campbell-Johnston (1812-1888), whose father was born in Dumfriesshire, once owned the land beneath both tracts. (See Annandale Road for more background.) His eldest son Augustine (1858-1920) was listed as Nithsdale’s proprietor. Nithsdale Road itself was actually laid out in 1906 on the Cheviotdale tract and officially named a year or two later.
