Norman Place

This was once an anonymous roadway, while what you now know as Bundy Drive – that is, the portion of it north of San Vicente – was called Canyon Drive, born in 1905 on the Westgate Acres subdivision. The City of Los Angeles annexed Westgate in 1916, and since L.A. already had a Canyon Drive in Los Feliz, the Westgate/Brentwood variant needed a new name. So City Council chose “Norman Way” while simultaneously dubbing this street “Norman Place”. That all happened in 1917. Where did “Norman” come from? That I do not know. It was probably arbitary: an easy-to-spell, easy-to-pronounce name that wasn’t in use elsewhere. Anyway, Norman Place and Norman Way lived side by side until 1925, when Council made the latter street part of Bundy Drive. Got all that?
