Norway Lane

Not a tribute to the Scandinavian country but a bit of wordplay. Norway Lane was born in 1924 as Norway Avenue. (City Council tweaked “Avenue” to “Lane” in 1957 as property owners felt it was more suitable.) Back in 1924, the stretch of Bundy Drive north of San Vicente was called Norman Way. And so the developers who laid out this street – none of them with Norwegian roots – squished “Norman Way” together to make “Norway”. Skål! A cute but short-lived joke, as city ordinance incorporated Norman Way into Bundy Drive in 1925. Presumably that was to prevent confusion with Norman Place; read that street’s entry for more convoluted name change history.
