Although Stevenson Ranch’s streets are named after notable writers, this arterial road doesn’t honor Edgar Allan Poe but Stevenson Ranch’s original developer Dale Eugene Poe (1931-1993), who broke ground on this subdivision in 1986. Poe Parkway was named two years later. Born in New Mexico, Dale Poe grew up in National City, a suburb of San Diego. He married Margaret “Maggie” Stevenson (1938-1993) in 1957, the same year he got into real estate. (Maggie’s maiden name likely put the “Stevenson” in Stevenson Ranch, but see Stevenson Ranch Parkway for a second opinion.) The Dale Poe Development Co. was incorporated in 1975. Of the Poes’ four kids, son Bill took over the firm after his parents died in an automobile accident: Maggie Poe was driving their car on Highway 99, missed a turn and crashed into an abandoned building.
