Grape Street

Although vineyards once grew near this roadway – see Nadeau Street about that – when Grape Street was named in 1904 it was simply the “G” in an alphabetical series of plant-themed streets laid out in the Burkhard Home tract due south of Firestone Boulevard (then still part of Manchester Avenue). It’s harder to recognize those A-B-C intentions these days, since Ash Street is now called Graham Avenue, Cedar Street is Holmes Avenue, and Date Street is Bandera Street. But Beach (a misspelling of Beech), Elm, Fir, Grape, Hickory, Ivy, and Juniper streets remain. P.S. The “Burkhard” of the Burkhard Home tract was landowner Joseph Burkhard (1848-1928), a banker and life insurance exec.
