This private cul-de-sac was named in 1994 by developer Robert W. Chu on his Monterey Views tract. Mei kwock – an older Western spelling of the original Chinese characters – is the Cantonese pronunciation of “America”. (Say it out loud and you can kind of hear it.) The characters are literally translated as “beautiful country”. Today, using the Roman alphabet, most people write it meiguo to reflect the Mandarin pronunciation.
