This street was christened by 1965. A non-native Spanish speaker was surely behind its name, for while tierra subida sort of translates as “rising ground” – subir being the Spanish verb for “to rise”, presumably in reference to the road’s ascent into the hills – the term itself is not real Spanish. (Tierra elevada or tierra alzaba would be more correct.) Alternatively, súbida – note the accent – means “sudden” in Spanish, but “sudden ground” makes no sense unless you’re jumping out of an airplane without a parachute.
