Named in April 1950 by Ray J. Blanco, this street honors Arthur Herman Segrell (1893-1961), who had just retired as mayor of Culver City. The Brooklyn-born Segrell grew up in and around Newark, NJ, where he launched his career as an insurance underwriter. He married Lilah Pearl Stanley (1895-1962), an amateur pianist, around 1918. The couple and their little daughters Doris and Janet moved to Culver City in 1925 and set up house on Carson Street, where they remained until Art’s death. First elected to Culver City Council in 1932, Arthur H. Segrell served for eighteen years – twelve of them as mayor, an appointed position. (He kept his insurance job all the while.) He was by all accounts a popular politician as well as a decent bowler.
