Named in October 1954 for Richard Perrin Graves (1906-1989), who was then the Democratic candidate for CA governor. (He lost to Republican incumbent Goodwin Knight.) Graves’s candidacy sort of came out of nowhere: he was best known as director of the League of California Cities. He was also a friend of developer Israel Rafkind, who was building a tract on the southeast corner of Louise and Haynes and decided to honor his buddy with a street. After his failed gubernatorial run, Graves got into real estate himself.
