Sunrise Street

The sole survivor of 1887’s Sunrise tract, in which three small streets shared an empyreal theme: Sunrise, Aurora, and Dawn. The tract was the brainchild – starchild? – of one Edward S. Field, most likely Edward Salisbury Field (1840-1927), real estate man, Occidental College trustee, and county supervisor. I’m guessing the names referred to the tract’s Eastside location: the sun rises in the east. Aurora Street was renamed Lee Street two years later because L.A. already had an Aurora Street, then its original bit west of Euclid became part of 7th Street in 1897. Dawn Street was presumably erased during construction of the Santa Ana Freeway in 1947. P.S. A different developer added a Sunset Street in 1887; it was renamed Camulos ten years later to avoid confusion with Sunset Boulevard.
