This 1902 street takes the middle name of Stella Maie Nadeau (1887-1951), granddaughter of Remi Nadeau, the late hotelier-winegrower who had once owned some 3,000 acres here. Although much of the land was sold off to Michael Cudahy in 1893, the Nadeaus obviously retained some of it: Maie Avenue was laid out (between Florence Avenue and Nadeau Street) on a tract owned by Stella’s father George. Stella, born and raised in this very neighborhood, married dentist Raymond C. Mathis in 1906 and had one child with him (Earl Nadeau Mathis, 1907-1943). He filed for divorce in 1909 – grounds undisclosed – and she married horn player-turned-car dealer Samuel B. Bennett in 1916. They were living on Oxford Avenue (in present-day Koreatown) by 1920 and that’s where Stella Maie Nadeau Bennett quietly spent the rest of her life.
