Sybrandy Avenue

This street honors Roy H. Sybrandy (1910-1998) or more specifically the home and dairy he had once owned at this location. Rients Sybrandy, as he was christened, immigrated to the U.S. from his native Netherlands in 1935 and by 1940 had settled in what was then considered part of Artesia. (Cerritos had not yet incorporated as its own city.) He married Anne Bouma (1912-2007), an Iowa girl, in 1942. They had two children together: Mary and Henry. The Sybrandys left this neighborhood in 1966 to set up a 20 acre dairy in Ontario, near the Chino border. Sybrandy Avenue was carved out in 1968 by prolific developers Nathan & David Shapell and Max Webb.
