I wish I had a quirky story behind this name, but Aloha Street was simply chosen by City civil engineers as a replacement for the former Avon Street, to avoid conflicts with another Avon Street in Silver Lake. The date of the change was May 12th, 1912. Why “Aloha”? Probably because it was short, available, easy to spell and pronounce, and started with “A” like Avon. The Hawaiian greeting, generally translated as “love and compassion”, was familiar to Angelenos by this time.
