This little cul-de-sac was named in 1990 for Arcy Torres (1934-), wife of congressman Esteban Torres, whose nearby street was christened at the same time. (Apparently neither of the Torreses appeared at the public dedication of their streets, although South El Monte’s mayor and city council showed up.) In spite of her husband’s prominence as a labor leader and politician, Arcy Torres kept out of the limelight and thus very little is known about her. She was born Arcelia Maria Sanchez to Mexican immigrant parents and grew up in East L.A., then in Boyle Heights. She married Torres in January 1955 and surely kept busy raising their five children: four daughters and a son.
