Avenida Puerto Vallarta

This cul-de-sac was christened in 1965 to honor Encino’s “sister city” Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Encino isn’t its own city, of course, but the partnership is an authentic one – or at least it was back in the day. (The “Sister Cities” movement, pairing American communities with those elsewhere in the world, was a charm offensive designed to combat the influence of Communism during the Cold War and is no longer as robust as it was then.) The Encino Chamber of Commerce, led by dentist Dr. Arnold Greene and his wife Rollie, first reached out to Puerto Vallarta officials in late 1962 to establish a sister city relationship. Avenida Puerto Vallarta was formally dedicated on August 11th, 1965; Puerto Vallarta mayor (technically “municipal president”) Óscar Rosales and his wife Carmelita attended the reception, emceed by Mexican-born Hollywood actor Gilbert Roland.
