Barbour Court

Named in 1904 by and for subdivider Henry Parkhurst Barbour (1854-1927), about whom you can read more at the entry for Playa del Rey’s Barbour Street. This cul-de-sac was laid out on the Nevills tract, on land owned by Canadian-born William A. Nevills (1842-1912), a colorful figure in the mining industry who was based in San Francisco at the time. In spite of the tract’s small size, Barbour spared no expense in promoting it with giant newspaper ads.
