Colyton Street

There could only be one source for this street’s name: Colyton, Devon, England, a small town next to the River Coly. It happens to be just three miles away from the larger seaside town of Seaton – which must then be the inspiration for L.A.’s Seaton Street, one block west of Colyton Street. Both byways were named in 1886 on a tract owned by Dr. Frederick Preston Howard (1835-1900), who happened to have been born in Devon. Unfortunately I haven’t found any records that could prove he specifically came from the Colyton/Seaton area, but one can assume. Dr. Howard’s tract also included Huber Street (now part of 4th Street) and Carolina Street (now Hewitt Street): his wife was born Caroline Huber.
