Ednuel Street

“Ednuel” is a play on “Ed Newell” and refers to Edward Logan Newell (1886-1960), who named this street in 1941 on a tract he owned with his stepmother, sister, and wife. Ed Newell was originally from Des Moines, IA. His father Edward Finley Newell was one of eight surviving siblings, seven of whom wound up in Los Angeles or Orange County. The family ran a furniture store in Des Moines but in 1909, a year after his wife May passed away, Edward Sr. decided to sell men’s clothes in Long Beach instead. Ed and his sister Evangeline came with him and father and son operated the Newell Clothing Co. until 1926. In 1913, Ed married Leila LeMonte Edwards, whose passion for solo travel must have contributed to their divorce twelve years later. Ed then wed actress Frances Areta Ross (1891-1984) in 1927 – see Loganrita Avenue for more on her – and within two years the childfree couple would come to this area and settle on 10th Ave., with Ed dabbling in real estate and walnuts. Their last home together was on the corner of Ednuel and Mayflower.
