Englander Street

Named for Ira Englander (1928-2005), dear friend of – and attorney for – Barry Taper, who developed this tract. (See Barrywood Ave. for more Taper-related streets.) Englander came to L.A. from Chicago as a youth; he went on to graduate from Los Angeles High School, USC, and UCLA Law School. Along with his legal and real estate endeavors, Englander was actively involved in Native American affairs, as an attorney for Navajo Nation, producer of the 1983 biopic Running Brave, about Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills, and general manager of the Morongo Casino, where in 1994 he was indicted for money laundering. (He pleaded guilty to one count of installing illegal slot machines.)
