Hellman Avenue

Named for influential banker Isaias W. Hellman (1842-1920); see Alhambra’s Hellman Avenue for a biography. Introduced on 1902’s Pasadena Villa tract, this is one of several local streets named for men associated with the Southern Pacific Railroad (see Collis Avenue). Hellman was key in bringing the SPRR to Los Angeles in 1876: he and John G. Downey raised $600,000 in capital – a gigantic sum at the time – to entice the railroad to extend its line down from San Francisco. Years later, he partnered with ex-SPRR executive Henry Huntington on expanding the Pacific Electric Railway across the Southland.
