Hellman Street

In 1888, the Alamitos Land Company expanded the Alamitos Beach townsite with eight new alphabetically-named east-west streets, beginning with Appleton for “A” and ending with Hellman for “H”. (The other six streets – Bishop, Catherwood, Darling, Eliot, Farrington, and Goodrich – have since been renamed.) Hellman Street honors Isaias W. Hellman (1842-1920), the powerful Los Angeles banker who cofounded the Alamitos Land Co. with fellow banker Leander Goodwin (who would die just three years later at 59) and Long Beach pioneers Thomas Flint and the Bixbys. See the San Gabriel Valley’s Hellman Avenue for a more substantial biography.
