Many San Fernando streets, named in 1874 when the town was founded, honor prominent 19th century Angelenos – even those who had nothing to do with San Fernando itself. Case in point: Thomas Dillingham Mott (1829-1904) and Stephen Hathaway Mott (1828-1909), two brothers from upstate New York who came to Los Angeles in its youth – “Tom” in 1852, “Steve” twelve years later – and made a splash in real estate, government, and industry. Please see Mott Street in Boyle Heights for more on the Motts.
