Named in 1886 on the Alamitos Beach development. Redondo means “round” in Spanish, but since this street isn’t even remotely round, we may assume that whoever named it (possibly Jotham or John Bixby) was inspired by Rancho Sausal Redondo, an old Mexican era land grant that stretched between present-day Playa del Rey, Inglewood, Lawndale, and Hermosa Beach. (Redondo Beach was founded in 1887 on a different rancho.) Alamitos Beach originally had twenty (mostly) Spanish-themed avenues in alphabetical order, from Alamitos to Termino. Redondo Ave. was simply the “R” in this group.
