The Shipley Glen tract was laid out here in 1905; the street itself was named by 1910. The landowners were Arthur Edward Hainsworth (1847-1929) and his son David (1877-1955), who were both born in Shipley, West Yorkshire, UK. (Shipley Glen was a Victorian era tourist attraction in that region.) The Hainsworths left England for Manitoba, Canada in 1887 and then upgraded to L.A.’s warmer climes in 1903. Both Arthur and David were carpenters by trade, with David going on to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Hainsworths – at least four of them, including matriarch Margaret and youngest child Annie – lived at the corner of Shipley Glen Drive and Avenue 50. Arthur died of a stroke while fighting a grass fire on the property. David got married – twice – and lived here for the rest of his life.
