Virginia Whitcomb (1879-1947) was the youngest daughter of Glendora founder George D. Whitcomb and his wife Leadora. In 1887, Daddy named this street for his little girl, who was born in Chicago, raised in Glendora, graduated from Pomona College, and worked as a schoolteacher. Now, here’s a curious twist: In 1909, Virginia married Canadian-born Dr. Harry Francis Sloane (1878-1913) and moved to Arizona with him; a year after he died after being thrown from a buggy, she married another Canadian, Arthur Watt Sloan (1876-1949) – no relation to Harry (apparently) and no silent “e”. They would live in Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, and finally in Long Beach.
