This street name might be a twofer. Tradition holds that it honors Washington Hadley (1817-1911), one of the Quakers who established Whittier in 1887 – and indeed, this is one of Whittier’s first named streets. But seeing as how Hadley is already remembered by Hadley Street (also named in 1887), I think it’s just as likely that Washington Avenue is simply named after good old George Washington (1732-1799), father of our country.
