Westboro Street

When Brentwood Park was first laid out in 1906, this street was dubbed Golden Gate Avenue – a nod to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, whose superintendent John McLaren (1846-1943) was hired by Brentwood Park’s owners to plan its landscaping. (Early ads for Brentwood Park promoted its supposed similarity to Golden Gate Park and name-dropped McLaren with fervor.) The street was rechristened by city ordinance in 1917, a year after Los Angeles annexed this area, as the city already had a Golden Gate Avenue in Silver Lake. Civil engineers chose “Westboro” and so there’s probably no reason for it – besides its pleasant sound and the street’s Westside location.
