Named in 1907 after Rev. James Thomas “J.T.” Wornom (1839-1922), a Sunland-based minister. Born and raised in central Illinois, Wornom fought in the Civil War and married his first wife Lois in 1866. She died of Bright’s disease in 1898 and Wornom wed Jennie Brosius (1851-1923) the following year. The couple came to Los Angeles in 1901 and settled in Sunland four years later, when Wornom took charge of the Free Methodist Church there. The nature-loving duo was famous for spreading the gospel in a horse-drawn camper well into the automobile era. When the good reverend passed away, locals hauled his body up a nearby mountain for burial; John Steven McGroarty gave his eulogy.
