Zombar Avenue

This street was given its monstrous moniker in 1927 on a tract that listed only the Security Trust & Savings Bank as mortgagee, thus obscuring the actual human(s) who owned the land. Zombar is an uncommon but not impossible surname; however, I found no Zombars living in Los Angeles in the 1920s-1930s. It could be the maiden name of some unknown developer’s wife or mother. It could be a misspelling of Zombor (a.k.a. Sombor), a city in Serbia. It could even be wordplay: John H. Ramboz (1879-1960) of Merchants National Bank and Sumpter F. Zombro (1864-1937) of Security-First National Bank were both prominent in financial circles at that time. But I’m not satisfied with any of these theories and so the case remains open.
