Although it’s missing that crucial tilde, Vinedo Avenue derives its name from viñedo, Spanish for “vineyard”. I assume that’s a nod to the vast vineyards grown here in the 1860s-1870s by L.J. Rose on his Sunny Slope ranch. The Pacific Electric Railway established Vinedo station here in 1902; Vinedo Avenue itself was introduced north of Foothill in 1923. South of Foothill, the road was originally called Annie Street, after one of L.J. Rose’s five daughters. (See Nina Street, named after another daughter, for the gory details.) It was renamed Vinedo in 1927.
