Named in 1937 by Ben W. Steinberg (c. 1902-?) and his wife Lillian (née Wagner, 1902-?), who signed her name “Lilyan” on the tract map. They owned the tract (south of 8th Street) as a partnership called The Alan Company, so obviously the name meant something to them. But what? I found no Alans in their family tree – their only known child was daughter Joann (1930-?) – but information on the couple is exceptionally scant. Ben was born in Utica, NY, Lillian in St. Louis, they married in Cleveland in 1924 and were in L.A. by 1930. Ben’s job in that year’s census was “electrician, motion pictures”. Ten years later: “paymaster, motion pictures”. The 1940 Los Angeles City Directory had the Steinbergs living at different addresses, so they presumably separated. That’s all I can tell you; they vanished from records after that. And don’t ask me what the “dele” in “Alandele” could possibly mean.
