Amalia Avenue

Named in 1923 for Amalia Snyder (1888-1977) by her husband Peter, who subdivided the Belvedere Gardens Square tract that year with John Bandini Winston Jr. of L.A.’s wealthy Bandini clan (nearby Margaret Ave. might be for Winston’s sister and/or grandmother). Our subject was born María Amalia Enriqueta de la Fuente in Querétaro, Mexico. I couldn’t dig up much information about her, but it appears her father was Spanish and her mother Mexican. She was living in San Antonio, TX with her first husband Henry Gordon when their son Herbert was born in 1909; Henry allegedly died soon after. She married Peter Snyder in Los Angeles in 1918 – see Snyder Lane for his dubious background – and they had one daughter, Beatriz. (Peter also adopted Herbert.) In 1951, eleven years after Peter’s death, Amalia married her third husband Arthur Smith. She is also honored by De la Fuente Street in Monterey Park, next to her husband’s landmark “Cascades” fountain.
