Mary Adelaine Boehme (1872-1950) went by her middle name, probably to distinguish her from her Irish mother Mary. Adelaine Avenue was christened in 1886 on the Malabar tract, co-owned by our subject’s father George Boehme (1830-1913), a tinner (specializing in stoves and roofs) originally from Alsace-Lorraine. Adelaine, the youngest of four kids and the Boehmes’ only daughter, first saw the light of day in Sacramento but grew up in Santa Monica, as the Boehmes settled in the then-new town in 1875. She married Henry Workman Keller (1869-1958) in 1894. The son of a pioneering L.A. winemaker (see Mateo Street), he was a noteworthy Angeleno in his own right and is best remembered for selling the enormous Rancho Topanga Malibu to the Rindge family, who then occupied it for decades. The Kellers had eight children and spent their final years – coincidentally or not – on Orange Grove Ave. just one block east of this street.
