Manzanita is a chaparral shrub found throughout the Southwest; its name is Spanish for “little apple”, which refers to the shrub’s red berries. Manzanita Street was laid out (as Manzanita Avenue) in the 1887 Manzanita Heights tract, owned by Francis and Georgiana Sanborn.
