Named in 1920 for five-year-old Andrita Glassell Somers (1915-1976), great-granddaughter of Glassell Park namesake Andrew Glassell (1827-1901), whose heirs owned this land. Born in Los Angeles to realtor Milton C. Somers and his wife Andrietta (née Glassell; her unusual first name was a combination of her parents’: Andrew Jr. and Rietta), Andrita Somers graduated from Marlborough School and UCLA, then went to Hawaii in 1938, where she met local boy Richard H. Wescott and married him two years later. In 1944, they left Honolulu for the mainland, had their second of two children, and ran various sporting goods and recreational businesses. It appears Andrita passed away at the Wescotts’ summer home in Mammoth Lakes. Several streets around here are named for Glassell family members, including Drew Street and Toland Way.
