Burger Avenue

Alas, there are no hamburger joints along Burger Avenue – and alas, I couldn’t find the inspiration behind its name. All I can tell you is that the street was originally laid out in 1921 as Douglas Avenue and was renamed Burger in 1923. (I do see a tiny “Burger Street” scrawled on a 1921 tract map, connecting 5th Street to Humphreys Avenue under what is now the 710 Freeway, but said scrawl might have been added after 1921.) I assume Burger was someone’s surname, since folks weren’t yet shortening the word “hamburger” to “burger” in 1923, but of the various Burgers who lived in SoCal at that time, none stand out as likely namesakes.
