Named for Bynner Albert Martin (1903-1965), editor-publisher of the now-defunct San Pedro News-Pilot, by his friend Percy King, who laid out this tract in 1952. (See El Rey Road for more on King.) When King asked Bynner if he would object to the naming, Bynner replied, “Object? I’m flattered, silly.” Martin was born in Walnut, Kansas but settled in San Pedro with his family while still in his teens. A graduate of Pomona College, he joined the News-Pilot staff in 1929 and attained the editorship in 1948. Apart from his newspaper duties, the hard-working and highly influential Martin was one of San Pedro’s biggest boosters. He and his wife Elizabeth had two children, Marilyn and Don.
